THE BIG IDEA No Labels is a nonpartisan advocacy organization designed to bring together leading thinkers from the left, the right, and all points in between. The multipartisan group works together to create a better method of coming up with solutions and to ensure equal news coverage of all political parties. A second goal is to facilitate the aggregation and collection of citizens’ views and opinions to be heard as one voice via social media and online organizing technology.

STARTED Nancy Jacobson, Mark McKinnon, John Avlon, Kiki McLean, and more than a dozen others founded No Labels in December 2010.

HOW IT SPREAD No Labels has heavyweight politicians and celebrities behind it. It hosted a series of “Road Shows” in which senior leaders traveled to specific cities to have discussions about the No Labels movement with local citizens. Also, it hosted well-publicized “State of the Unity” gatherings the night of the 2011 State of the Union address. No Labels issues press releases naming politicians for their good or bad actions on behalf of bipartisanship. Its website and social media also foster involvement, with a Twitter hashtag #NoLabels and asking people to sign an online No Labels Declaration. In offline life, people are recruited to serve as Citizen Leaders and asked for donations.

WHERE IT STANDS NOW No Labels continues to form alliances with other citizens’ movements, such as Howard Schultz’s Upward Spiral. There are more than 80,000 Citizen Leaders for No Labels. In June 2012 there will be a No Labels National Convention in Philadelphia.
